SMHI

Overview

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute is the national governmental agency responsible for operations in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography and climate at national level under the Ministry of Environment. SMHI’s mission is to manage and develop information on weather, water and climate that provides knowledge and advanced decision-making information for public services, the private sector and the general public. SMHI aims to contribute to increased social benefit, safety and a sustainable society. SMHI comprises core services, research departments and consultant services and operates both at national and international level, being the Swedish representative in numerous international organizations and also participating in a wide variety of national and international projects.

SMHIs core service is responsible for warnings, forecasts and preparedness in meteorology, hydrology and oceanography. The core service is also responsible for climate change information towards the public and specifically to meet societal needs related to adaptation and mitigation. SMHI runs the oil spill forecasting and backtracking system on behalf of HELCOM. The national programme on marine environmental monitoring in the Baltic and the eastern-most part of the North Sea is run by SMHI in cooperation with the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. In addition SMHI is the national data host for oceanographic and hydrologic data and in the regional organization Baltic Operational Oceanographic System (BOOS), SMHI has a coordinating role in making the in-situ observations available.
